ABSTRACT

Research indicates the COVID-19 epidemic changes people's health and diet, However, this has not yet been well discussed in Taiwan, especially in college students. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of distance learning on college students' dietary patterns, sleep quality and perception of stress during the COVID-19 epidemic in Taiwan. 265 college students from a university in Taichung were recruited in this study. The self-administered online questionnaire was used to investigate the changes in eating behavior, sleep quality, and perception of stress before and one month after distance learning, and further analyzed the relationship among them. The questionnaire contains demographic information, dietary questionnaires (including six categories of food intake behaviors, convenience food intake frequency), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Perceived Stress Scale (Chinese 14-item PSS). The results showed that the proportion of college students to meet the recommended Taiwan Dietary Guidelines amount in vegetables (21.9%), fruits (27.5%), meats and dairy products (15.8%), and nuts and seeds (11.3%) were lower during distance learning. The frequency of convenient food intake was lower during distance learning (13.31 +/- 6.10 points;never to occasionally). During the distance learning period, there was a significant negative correlation between dietary patterns and sleep quality (r = -0.160, p = 0.009), It shows that college students with higher dietary pattern scores have better sleep quality. During the distance learning period, there was a significant positive correlation between sleep quality and perceived stress (r = 0.320, p < 0.001), It shows that college students with higher levels of stress had poorer sleep quality. This study found that the lower the perceived stress of college students, the better their diet and sleep quality;conversely, the higher the perceived stress, the worse their diet and sleep quality. Studies have shown that a healthy, balanced diet can reduce the risk of getting various diseases. Therefore, in the post-epidemic era, it is recommended that schools increase the accessibility and availability of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, nuts and seeds on campus to make it easier for teachers and students to obtain such healthy food in order to achieve the goal of promoting balanced diet.Copyright © 2022 Nutrition Society in Taipei. ABSTRACT

Higher education has not been immune to the widespread disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic, commonly known as COVID-19. Colleges have quickly evolved and adapted to this new normal, from leaving campuses to investing in online instruction and assisting students and staff remotely. However, international lockdowns have had a devastating effect on graduating high school students who had planned to study abroad. According to a survey by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a highly revered annual publication of global ranking for educational institutions, more than 48% of Indian students intending to study abroad changed their minds because of the COVID-19 outbreak. This study aims to discuss how the pandemic affected students' decision-making on a wide range of factors. The study's goals are to determine whether the coronavirus affected college students' plans to study abroad, including how it influenced the students' interest in pursuing their higher education and how factors such as financial breakdown, parental emotion, and fear of the pandemic have impacted students' intentions to study overseas. The research will collect and analyze primary data quantitatively to test the hypothesis and provide solid evidence for the goals. The study's findings reveal that students' perspectives differed, suggesting that some students considered deferring their overseas education plans in response to the worsening epidemic. ABSTRACT

Schools transitioned face-to-face (F2F) classes online in spring 2020 due to COVID-19. This paper reports on changes in study hours of business majors at a public university amid this transition. The analysis by enrollment type of quantitative data collected from 250 students shows an overall significant difference in study hours per class for all students. However, the difference is between students enrolled in online and F2F classes before the transition. F2F-only or online-only students did not significantly have a change in study hours after the transition. This report discusses these results and explores suggestions for helping students transition to online learning. ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the psychological characteristics of college students during the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), so as to provide a basis for psychological intervention. Methods From May 17, 2020 to Jun. 17, 2020, the adjusted psychological questionnaires for emergent events of public health (PQEEPH) was surveyed among the college students of Beijing Union University. The questionnaire included 5 dimensions: depression, neurasthenia, fear, obsessive-compulsive anxiety, and hypochondriasis. Four grades were scored according to the degree and frequency of emotional responses: 0 means no symptoms, 1 means mild symptoms, 2 means moderate symptoms, and 3 means severe symptoms. Results A total of 3 019 valid questionnaires were collected. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the emotional responses of college students, from the most serious to the least, were fear, neurasthenia, depression, obsessive-compulsive anxiety, and hypochondriasis, with the incidences being 87.7% (2 648/3 019), 44.8% (1 353/3 019), 37.4% (1 129/3 019), 17.3% (522/3 019), and 11.6% (350/3 019), respectively. The fear scores of female students were higher than those of male students (P<0.001), the fear scores of college students from towns/suburbs were higher than those from rural and urban areas (both P<0.017), the scores of depression, neurasthenia and obsessive-compulsive anxiety of college students with confirmed COVID-19 cases around them or their relatives participated in the epidemic prevention and control as medical staff or logistics support personnel were higher than those without such conditions (all P<0.017), and the scores of depression, obsessive-compulsive anxiety and hypochondriasis of college students with suspected COVID-19 cases around them were higher than those without such condition (all P<0.017). Females were more likely to have moderate to severe fear than males (odds ratioOR=1.53, 95% confidence intervalCI1.25-1.88, P<0.001), those with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases around them were more likely to have moderate to severe fear than those without such conditions (OR=2.03, 95% CI 1.29-3.20, P=0.002), and those living in towns/suburbs were more likely to have moderate to severe fear than those living in rural and urban areas (OR=0.72, 95% CI 0.56-0.94, P=0.015;OR=0.78, 95% CI 0.63-0.97, P=0.025). Conclusion COVID-19 epidemic has impact on the psychology of college students. ABSTRACT

A global spreading corona virus at 2019 (COVID-19) declared as emergent worldwide, due to its quick spreading and high rates of mortality that serious disruptions. The objective of this research is to explore further into effect of different types of covid-19 vaccinations (Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sinopharm) on some coagulation parameters from random samples of students in college of pharmacy/ university of Ker-bala. A case-control study was carried out with Iraqis living in Kerbala city particularly college students in Kerbala University/ College of Pharmacy from 2021/1/16 to 2022/4/16. This study was done to encompass quantitative and qualitative analysis of covid 19 vaccination types and possible thrombosis that occur after vaccination. The enrolled sixty participants of male and female were aged 18years and above. A questionnaire was made questions pertaining age were inquired to make sure participants fulfilled the criteria for in-clusion, past medical history, previous infection with covid 19 were incorporated into the survey. The scien-tific and ethical committee provided their ethical approval in college of pharmacy at University of Kerbala. Our results in this study indicate significant differences in coagulation parameters readings of (Pt, Ptt) between vaccination groups and control by using ANOVA statistical analysis of SPSS. Our study showed that the difference between the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups was considerable (Pfizer, AstraZeneca & Sinopharm Covid 19 vaccines) and control group in thrombotic measurements time and platelet mean value. The most effective and economical method of preventing COVID-19 infection is still vaccination. ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine the effect of COVID-19 on eye sight due to increase screen time in undergraduate students of medical school. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Place and duration of study: This survey was carried out from October 2022 to December 2022 in Army Medical College Rawalpindi. Questionnaires were filled in person and also online-based platform was used to distribute the e-questionnaire, developed using the Google Form. The participants were asked to share the e-questionnaire with their friends using Facebook and Messenger. Method(s): Participants were selected for the study using non-probability consecutive sampling. College students of 20-25 years were included in the study. Sample size was 400 according to a study done internationally. Participants with comorbidities (cataract, glaucoma) were excluded from study. Participants having (trouble concentrating on things such as reading the newspaper, books or watching television) were included in the study. Digital eye strain was calculated using validated computer vision syndrome (CVS-Q) questionnaire to measure the symptoms such as eye fatigue, headache, blurred vision, double vision, itching eyes, dryness, tears, eye redness and pain, excessive blinking, feeling of a foreign body, burning or irritation, difficulty in focusing for near vision, feeling of sight worsening, and sensitivity to light. Qualitative data was analyzed using Chi square test. Results A total number of 470 responses were recorded, out of which 257 (54.7%) were males and 213(45.3%) were females. In our study, the most common symptom was headache, affecting 58.1% of the population before COVID 19 which has increased to 83.2% and the P value is less than 0.001.Theother symptoms which also showed P value less than 0.001 were blurred vision while using digital device, irritated or burning eyes, dry eyes and sensitivity to bright light. Conclusion The practical implication of the study is to create awareness among general population about COVID, that eye sight is Bull`s Target to be affected by it and simple preventing measures can be taken. The purpose of this study is to limelight the importance that during COVID 19 lockdown the excessive use of digital devices and their cons on the ocular health among future health care workers.Copyright © 2023 Lahore Medical And Dental College. ABSTRACT

Background: Childhood trauma confers risks to mental health. However, little is known about whether home quarantine (HQ) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic exaggerated or mitigated the effect of childhood trauma on mental health. Objective: To examine the modulating effects of prior childhood traumas on the longitudinal changes of psychiatric symptoms in college students before and after HQ during the pandemic. Methods: This was a two-wave longitudinal study on the mental health of 2,887 college students before and after HQ during the COVID-19 pandemic. The relationships between the changes in the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), 16-item Prodromal Questionnaire (PQ-16), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) scores were analyzed. Results: The students with childhood trauma showed a significantly greater decrement in psychiatric symptoms after HQ (F = 17.21, 14.11, 18.87, and 17.42 for PHQ-9, PQ-16 objective and distress, and SCL-90, respectively). The correlation coefficients between the CTQ and these symptoms scales were significant at baseline (r = 0.42, 0.34, 0.37, and 0.39), and decreased after HQ (r = 0.17, 0.20, 0.18, and 0.19). The decrement of depressive, psychotic, and overall symptoms was positively correlated with the scores of the CTQ (r = 0.08-0.27) but negatively correlated with SSRS (r = -0.08--0.14). Multilinear regression analysis confirmed the results of the CTQ and SSRS regarding the modulation of the dynamic changes in psychiatric symptoms. A constructed structural equation model indicated that the total effects of childhood trauma on decreased psychiatric symptoms were partly mediated by lower baseline social support. Conclusion: Home quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic could blunt the adverse effects of childhood trauma on mental health, especially for prodromal psychotic symptoms in college students. Changes in relative deprivation and social support may be mediating factors.

ABSTRACT

The topic refers to the processes of connectivity, access to digital tools, and the disposition of university students who were affected by their university semesters in person, and due to the health emergency caused by COVID-19, they had to go to virtual classes in an improvised way. The general aim was to inquire about the possession of digital tools, connectivity, and student disposition for virtual classes. This article is the product of an exploratory, non-experimental and descriptive study where the information was collected through an online survey published in a massive WhatsApp group, where there are more than 240 students of the Bachelor of Mathematics at the Universidad Del Atlantico whose total population ranges at 790 students. The main results obtained are the changes in a general way like this: 1) Some students do not feel prepared to receive classes remotely or complete enrollment procedures virtually;2) It is necessary to privilege the use of platforms that are low data consumption;and 3) In the region, the electricity service is not guaranteed on a regular basis, turning off access to connectivity.

ABSTRACT

This work presents partial results of a research study that has proposed to describe the composition of the student job based on the analysis of the characteristics that constituted its main features in the private management university of the Argentine Republic in the framework of the pandemic. In the analysis, the knowledge offered from the study of the biographical, occupational and academic trajectories of the students of the degree level education careers of the Universidad Abierta Interamericana (UAI). In this advance, the sociodemographic variables that contextualized the job of studying are analyzed, as well as their incidence. Among the salient factors around the development of the studying job, the incidence of work, social relations, the organization of spaces and times in the home have been highlighted.

ABSTRACT

Psychosocial stress negatively impacts our mental and physical health, predisposing us to illness, worsened mental health, and accelerated aging. Conversely, regular physical activity, such as exercise and sports training, positively impacts our health. These opposing effects are intriguing because psychosocial stress and physical activity were inextricably linked throughout human evolution. Large populations of humans have only recently begun transitioning into more sedentary lifestyles, uncoupling psychosocial stress from physical activity. Improving our understanding of these two factors and their interactions will, in turn, improve our understanding of the mechanisms through which psychosocial stress impacts health in both modern and ancestral human populations.My dissertation examines whether physical activity moderates the association between psychosocial stress and capillary blood telomere length in NCAA student-athletes and their non- athlete counterparts in the general student population. My first paper develops an in-depth comparison of psychosocial stress in these two groups using a suite of psychosocial stress surveys and an adapted cognitive interview protocol. Student-athletes (N=65) reported lower levels of current perceived stress and anxiety symptoms (p<0.05) but similar levels of childhood psychosocial stress, recent exposure to external stressors, and depressive symptoms compared to non-athletes (N=57). My second paper utilized self-report and objective measures of physical activity (i.e., accelerometry) to compare physical activity patterns in these groups. Student- athletes (N=60) both self-reported higher levels of physical activity and recorded higher levels of activity via accelerometry (p>0.001) compared to non-athletes (N=50). Interestingly, categorical measures of activity levels (i.e., time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity) identified Rowers as the most active among student-athletes, but continuous measures of activity levels (e.g., total physical activity level) identified Track and Field athletes as the most active (p>0.05 for both comparisons).My third and final paper tested whether higher physical activity weakened the association between childhood psychosocial stress and telomere length estimated from capillary blood collected on Hemaspot HF devices (N=111). Telomeres are DNA sequences that protect the ends of chromosomes. They shorten with cell replication, age, and oxidative stress, leading to functional decline with age and worsened health outcomes. Importantly, psychosocial stress is thought to accelerate TL shortening. My a priori analyses did not support a direct association between psychosocial stress, physical activity, or the interaction of these variables and telomere length. However, a post hoc analysis found that individuals who recorded higher total physical activity demonstrated a positive association between childhood psychosocial stress and telomere length (i.e., higher childhood stress predicted longer telomeres) while individuals who recorded lower total physical activity had a negative association (i.e., higher childhood psychosocial stress predicted shorter telomeres).My results do not offer explicit support for the hypothesis that physical activity moderates the effects of psychosocial stress on telomere length. However, my project adds to the literature in at least several ways. It produced a novel and much-needed comparison of psychosocial stress between NCAA student-athletes and non-athletes. It illustrated and validated several data collection techniques for psychosocial stress and physical activity. Further, my telomere findings offer an exciting direction for the future exploration of psychosocial stress- physical activity interactions. Lastly, this work improves our overall understanding of NCAA student-athletes' mental and physical health and how their unique circumstances intersect with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. ABSTRACT

Obesity is one of risk factors that aggravates when someone exposed to virus;in this case, coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). The Covid-19 virus pandemic has resulted various changes, both in the socioeconomics of the country and individual habits. This study aims to examine the association between nutrition knowledge, physical activity, and college students' eating habits during Covid-19 pandemic. Data collected included nutrition knowledge, eating habits, and physical activity, which were obtained from an online survey using Google form. The analysis showed that there was no significant association between nutrition knowledge and nutrients adequacy levels along with eating habits and physical activity. © 2023 UPM Press. ABSTRACT

Purpose of Study: College for many is a time of transition. This transition from adolescence to young adulthood can be very stressful. During the COVID-19 pandemic, rates of suicide, depression and anxiety increased in adolescents and young adults. Recently, Wang and colleagues (2020) found that among 2,031 students in a large US university, 48% reported having moderate-to-severe depression, 38% had moderate-to-severe anxiety, and 18% had thoughts of suicide. Effective strategies to help emerging adults cope with stress is critically needed to decrease these alarming data. The primary aim of this study was to compare the effects of aerobic exercise and yoga on college students' perceived levels of stress. A secondary aim of the study was to examine whether athlete status would moderate the effectiveness of either intervention. Methods Used: A sample of 55 college students were recruited via email during the spring of 2022. Students were randomly assigned to complete a single, 20-minute session of either yoga or aerobic exercise. Participant's current and chronic stress levels were recorded both before and after exercise. Chronic stress was measured using Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale and current stress was measured using a modified version of the same scale. To support the second research aim, participants were asked to report if they were a member of a college-affiliated athletic team during the 2021-2022 academic year. Demographic characteristics including age, gender, and ethnicity were also collected. Summary of Results: A 2 (Time) X 2 (Condition) x 2 (Athlete Status) mixed factorial ANOVA was conducted. Results indicated that both aerobic exercise and yoga led to a significant decrease in chronic stress (p=.03), although there were no meaningful differences between the two conditions (p=.075). This pattern of results held for current stress as well, with both groups experiencing an equivalent decrease in current stress (p<.001). Athlete-status did not significantly predict changes in current or chronic stress, nor did it moderate the efficacy of either intervention. Conclusion(s): Taken together, these findings indicate that a small bout of exercise, regardless of type, can help decrease reported stress for college students. They also provide preliminary evidence about the efficacy of exercise as stress reduction for college athletes. Our findings provide further support for using exercise as a practical strategy for coping with stress. (Table Presented).

ABSTRACT

Using data from a national online sample, the current study examined factors impacting changes in alcohol use immediately following the WHO pandemic declaration (March 2020), including pre-COVID risk for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Participants with pre-COVID AUD risk, who experienced at least one COVID-related problem (e.g. housing, finances), demonstrated the greatest increase in weekly drinking. However, college students at-risk for AUD pre-COVID, with academic disruptions, showed the greatest consumption increases. The findings provide insight into the complex relationships between COVID-19 related disruptions, preexisting AUD risk, and their impact on risky drinking during a critical period in the pandemic. Implications for future public health prevention and intervention responses are discussed.Copyright © 2023 Taylor & Francis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effects of perceived risk of COVID-19 of college students on their anxiety and depression, as well as the roles of attention to negative information and perceived social support, so as to provide theoretical basis for colleges and universities to formulate corresponding intervention measures. Methods By the convenience sampling method, totally 1 404 college students from Shaanxi and Henan provinces were investigated online by using General Information Questionnaire, Perceived Risk of COVID-19 Pandemic Scale, Attention to Negative Information Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Perceived Social Support Scale. SPSS 20. 0 was used for data analysis, Pearson correlation method was used to explore the correlation between variables. The mediating effect of attention to negative information and the moderating effect of perceived social support were analyzed by PROCESS. Results The scores of anxiety and depression of the 1 404 college students included in the study were 4.03 +/- 4.48 and 6.21 +/- 5.41, respectively. The detection rate of anxiety symptom was 29.9%, and that of depression symptom was 44.4%. The risk perception of COVID-19 epidemic of the college students was positively correlated with attention to negative information (r = 0.373, P<0.001), anxiety (r = 0.227, P<0.001), and depression (r = 0.226, P<0.001). Anxiety (r = 0.553, P<0.001) and depression 0 = 0.497, P<0.001) were positively correlated with attention to negative information, while perceived social support was negatively correlated with the risk perception of the COVID-19 (r = - 0.154, P<0.001), attention to negative information (r= - 0.259, P<0.001), anxiety (r = - 0.321, P<0.001) and depression (r=- 0.278, P<0.001). The risk perception of COVID-19 affected the anxiety and depression of the students mainly through the mediating effect of attention to negative information. The total effect of risk perception of COVID-19 and anxiety was 0. 227, and the mediating effect accounted for 80. 18% of the total effect. The total effect of risk perception of COVID-19 and depression was 0. 228, and the mediating effect accounted for 90. 35% of the total effect. Perceived social support played a moderating role in the last half of this mediating model. Conclusion Risk perception of COVID-19 indirectly affects the occurrence of anxiety and depression in college students through attention to negative information, and perceived social support plays a moderating role in this mediating model. The findings suggest that when a risk event occurs, colleges and universities should pay attention to guiding students to adjust their attentional bias to external information, and give students enough care and support to improve their mental health.Copyright © 2023 Xi'an Medical University. ABSTRACT

Emerging data make clear that, while there are common pandemic experiences related to mental health across different populations, access to those shared experiences is often disproportionate. In the context of exploring expansive definitions of health as part of their Introduction to Urban Community Health course, students at a large, public university in New York City were given the opportunity to engage with the Pandemic Journaling Project (PJP) beginning in June 2020. This paper explores the impact of both creating their own journals, and reading and reflecting on the public entries of others, on student mental health, and on students' abilities to discuss and process their health status, holistically defined. It raises questions of how definitions of "normal" in relation to feelings of diminished mental health are shared and reified in the context of the pandemic, asking if the process of journaling might be a way not just to capture mental health histories of the pandemic, but also to create an inclusive, therapeutic space for a conversation around mental health.Copyright © 2022

ABSTRACT

Background: The world has experienced a pandemic in the last 100 years which has caused abrupt changes in mobility and lifestyle habits. Objective(s): To identify the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the purchase and consumption of food in university students. Method(s): Prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study of 335 university students. The evaluation instrument consisted of general data, food shortages and price increase, changes in habits and healthy eating, with 11 questions in total. An analysis was made with descriptive statistics and Pearson's Chi-square with statistical significance level of p<0.05. Result(s): The most used modality of purchase before and during the confinement was face-to-face (53.73%), showed a significant relationship between the consumption of food of low biological value (junk) under factors of anxiety, depression, boredom and a relationship between students' eating and interest in healthy eating with Pearson's Chi-square values of 26.09 and 72.81 respectively. Conclusion(s): There were no changes in the modality of acquiring their food, modifications are observed in the consumption of junk food and interest in maintaining a healthier diet during the confinement by COVID-19.Copyright © 2022 Sociedad Espanola de Nutricion Comunitaria. ABSTRACT

Quarantine is one of the effective approaches to control the spread of COVID-19. However, prolonged isolation may harm the health of residents, especially students, who are quarantined in dormitories. This study surveyed students' behaviors, living environment, and psychological state through an online questionnaire. The results showed that during the isolation period, the participants' discomfort mainly came from high temperatures, high humidity, loud sounds, and dark lighting. Moreover, about half of the students experienced severe anxiety or depression, with poor sleep and an unclear mind being the most common problems. Additionally, this study focused on exploring the correlations between environmental perceptions and the psychological state of isolated students, that were identified to be significant. Furthermore, as isolation time was prolonged, the psychological state of isolated students worsened, and the most significant factor changed from thermal sensations to acoustic sensations. Interestingly, the psychological state of males was worse than females, and they were more easily affected by their thermal and acoustic environments. Therefore, keeping the environment comfortable has a positive influence on maintaining the good psychological condition of people in isolation. This study can provide suggestions for the improvement of indoor environments and for the mental health of people in isolation and in other similar situations.
